How to Make Your Next Move as Painless as Possible

Unfortunately, moving is something most of us will have to deal with at some point or another. In fact, in 2010 alone, 6.7 million United States households moved. And, according to statistics from the U.S. Bureau of the Census, more than 15 percent of the United States population moves every year. It’s a pretty hard thing to avoid, especially if you ever want to move out of your childhood town. Fortunately, I have several tips for you to make your next move as painless as possible, whether it’s a long-distance military move, or you’re just moving down the street, and whether you’re hiring a full-service moving company or packing some moving pods yourself.

1. Consider being flexible with the time you move if you are thinking about hiring a moving company. There are certain times of the year when most people move. Summer is a very popular time for people to move, as well as any time during the beginning or end of the month or week. If you can be flexible about your moving date and move mid-month and/or mid-week, your moving company may charge you less.

2. Do your research before choosing a moving company. Do not sign up for any free quotes or estimates that are based solely on information you enter into the company’s website. This is usually just a cheap tactic by the moving company to get your personal information without providing any services. A moving company will need to see all of the furniture and other goods that need to be moved in order to provide an accurate estimate.

3. Consider utilizing the technological wonder that is moving pods. Pods storage can be extremely useful and wallet-friendly. The concept is simple enough. Your pods moving company will drop off your pods, which you then pack at your leisure. Once you’re all packed, the company will have your moving pods shipped to your new home. This is generally a cheaper solution and allows you more flexibility when packing and moving.

4. If you do decide to utilize a moving company instead of moving pods, there are several ways to save money besides moving in the middle of the week. You can create your own hybrid move that has your moving company doing only some of the work, such as only packing or only transporting. The most popular hybrid move is to pack everything yourself, and then have a moving company load everything into a truck which you then drive to your destination. This way, the moving company can handle the most strenuous part of the move for you.

While moving can certainly be unpleasant, it might be an indication that you have a higher education. Statistics show that those who have graduate from college tend to relocate more often, and move longer distances, than people with only a high-school diploma. You might even say that it’s an indication that you’re “moving up” in the world. Get it? That’s some quality moving-related humor on which to end this article.

I absolutely can’t stand moving! It’s, literally, the worst thing in the world. I can’t think of anything else that would be worse than moving. Well, maybe a cross country move. I’ll stay right where I am, thank you very much.
