Those working in an executive sales career group knows how important it is to find and hire sales people or hire a sales career rep. Headhunters and people in executive sales groups should be careful about finding the right people for the right job.
Some people argue that sales are the most important part of the business so it’s important for those who find sales people find ones who have strong sales abilities. Here are some key qualities that strong salespeople possess.
Confident. Executive search groups who are hiring sales reps are looking for people who ooze an air of positivity and confidence. They are the people who smile in the face of adversity, know how to get down to brass tacks and finish a sale. Recruitment agencies are always looking to tell clients they have just the person in mind for the job and said person is ready, willing and capable of selling and being at the top of his or her game.
Social. Candidates for sales careers who are great at communicating are the ones that get hired. If a sales person talks in a way that is friendly but still formal, salesy but not pitchy and forceful but not pushy, they are going to be able to target their audience which will help them achieve more sales for the company.
Self Starting. When executive search groups find the self motivated person, they know they have the right person for the sales career. This is an individual who looks for solutions, takes initiatives, is directive and can approach customers without any hesitation. Of course, this person is never too pushy or acts in a manner that turns customers off. The successful salesperson is the one who reaches out and shows the customer that they are knowledgeable about the product or concept.
Respectful. The person that an executive search group hires should have respect for the customers and his line of work. Showing the customer respect makes great sense because no one in their right mind would buy from someone who was disrespectful. In turn, the salesperson should also have respect for the company for which they work.
Forward Thinking. An innovative salesperson is able to solve the problems quickly and find new ways to sell to the customers. Executive search groups are always looking for creative salespeople. The executive search group wants someone who doesn’t need to be spoon fed and can handle procedure on their own.
Decisive. Make sure that the sales career candidate that you hire is able to make decisions in a timely manner. The decisions should be informed and well thought out, but also need to be done quickly. A salesperson should make quick decisions in different situations and this quality is directly related to the salesperson’s performance.

I’ve considered a career in sales but I wonder if its all about your personality or if you can learn to be “someone else” while you practice sales. I’m not shy, per se, but I’m not pushy either. It’s a mix that I think could work.
If you can learn to be convincing, a smooth talker and someone skilled at the art of making sales, you might be able to do the job without being a jerk and without changing who you are.
